Used by Bartenders and Baristas to make sweetened cocktails and coffees, simple syrup couldn’t get much easier. Outlined below is the basic preparation (1:1 ratio sugar to water) and the rich preparation ( 2:1 ratio sugar to water) but simple syrup can be made with a ratio of up to 5:1 due to sucrose saturation limits in water. Syrup stores up to 3 weeks in a refrigerated airtight container.
I love to use this syrup when making my favorite iced coffee. Since the sugar is already dissolved, you can sweeten your drink without it becoming grainy.

Simple Syrup

Used by Bartenders and Baristas to make sweetened cocktails and coffees, this basic condiment couldn't get much easier. Outlined below is the basic preparation (1:1 ratio sugar to water) and the rich preparation ( 2:1 ratio sugar to water) but simple sugar can be made with a ratio of up to 5:1 due to sucrose saturation limits in water. Check out the recipe notes at the bottom for flavor additions suggestions.
Measuring Cup
Saucepan
Whisk
Storage vessel with lid
- 1 Cup Granulated Sugar 2 cups for Rich Simple Syrup
- 1 Cup Water
- See notes below for flavor additions
Combine sugar and water in saucepan over medium heat.
Whisk occasionally until all the sugar is dissolved. Do not bring to a boil.
Take off heat and let cool.
Transfer to storage container, stores up to three weeks in the fridge.
Extracts
You can add many extracts to your simple syrup, this is especially great when using in coffees.
Add no more than 1 Tablespoon of your desired extract to the above recipe when you add the sugar and water to the pan. Mix and match flavors if you like, just don’t add more than a tablespoon total of all extracts combined.
Citrus Zest
Adding the zest from a lemon, lime or other citrus will offer a subtle flavor great in many cocktails. Add with the sugar and water in step one.
Floral
Add about a tablespoon of your favorite edible blossoms after all sugar is dissolved and taken off heat. We’ve tried Rose, Hibiscus, Lavender, Tulip, and Orchid with great results.
